Music Education

As a music educator, I teach the talking drum and music business.

The talking drum is called the gangan and it originates from the Yoruba tribe of Western Nigeria.

My interest in playing and teaching the gangan comes from the need to uphold, refine and protect my cultural heritage from extinction.

Some people believe that the playing of traditional musical instruments must be accompanied by dance because that is the cultural norm.

I opine that these cultural musical instruments can also be enjoyed without dance just the way western musical instruments such as the piano, violin, guitar, etc are enjoyed especially when played in a drum circle or in a recital.

Western musical instruments do not need dance accompaniments to be enjoyable.

The same goes for cultural musical instruments.

As cultural dance instructors focus on teaching dance to their pupils and students, I focus on teaching drums to my pupils and students.

However, there are dance steps that culturally accompany these talking drums such as the dundun dance and these can be taught to my clients in addition to the drum classes based on request.

Online drum classes are available.

I advocate for the inclusion of Nigerian traditional musical instruments in our modern music.

The tabla is consistently present in Indian music and the Indians have no apologies for promoting their music art.

As such, Nigerians should promote their musical art too.

With respect to music business, I teach:

  1. Touring
  2. Public Relations
  3. Music Promotions
  4. Artist Management
  5. Band Management
  6. Stage Performance
  7. Stage Management
